The Pest Exterminator Role Has Changed Over Time

All through history, the role of a pest exterminator has always been to help the community to eliminate any insect or animal life that poses a threat to food production or health. Known carriers of diseases have always caused this pest nuisance such as rats, and even domestic animals like dogs and cats. Sometimes they have grown to be so numerous and become a constant menace in the streets. Pests which are becoming a threat to food crops must be controlled especially when this happens together with the threat of famine.

Populations have faced potential famine in the past due to a serious failure of food crops. As such, pests control is of vital importance as these pests can cause major problems to our food supply. Nowadays, it is far more easy to control food pests with the aid of chemicals. However, we have seen some worrying signs of reversing. Some pests are producing more resilient strains that can resist the chemicals that are traditionally used. So, it is an ongoing battle to protect our food supplies.

It has never been easy to solve the problem of excessive numbers of dogs and cats in the streets. However, in the past, communities have come up with a practical solution. Some communities have organized themselves where people go to the streets in order to round up those animals that do not appear to have a recognized owner. After some time, they were simply killed when homes are not available for these strays. Other communities prefer to employ a pest exterminator to do this work for them.

Also, rodents have been a constant menace to humans all along and even until today they are still a problem. Widely used by pest exterminators all along and even today are the traditional methods of using crude poisons and traps to deal with these rodents. However, we may see some changes to these methods of rodent control in future. There are some suggestions from environmental groups to use exclusion to prevent breeding and also to introduce predators which feed on rodents to reduce their population. They think these would be better methods to deal with the problem. Some sympathy with this view has been expressed by the Federal Government although they have not eliminated the use of poisons altogether.

The traditional work of the pest exterminator has evolved somewhat over time. Pests such as rodents are still a problem. However, in order to deal with them, new methods have been developed. In order to control the population of rats and to prevent them from growing back to previous numbers, the Federal Government recognizes that new strategies need to be used. Although there are still a certain number of stray dogs and cats in every city and that need to be caught and controlled, their population is now mainly controlled by birth control methods. Inevitably, some of these strays need to be destroyed. But, this is more humanely done nowadays, unlike what a pest exterminator would have done previously.
